Wellington police nab suspected burglar and arsonist

Police have caught a man for an alleged burglary and a series of arsons around Wellington CBD, but are still looking to solve another deliberately lit fire on the same morning.

The fire service and police officers were kept busy on Tuesday morning with a spate or arson attacks around the city.

They've since arrested a 47-year-old man - who the occupants found inside the building on Tuesday - with burglary and arson.

Detective Sergeant Haley Ryan says the owners are relieved someone has been taken into custody.

But while they've nabbed one alleged offender, they're still looking for information about another fire on Nairn St on Tuesday morning, where a home was extensively damaged.

Those responsible set a couch, which had been left outside the front of the property, on fire.

The occupants were home at the time, but managed to get out safely and unharmed.

Police say they have "strong leads" in trying to find those responsible.

However, investigators still want information from the public about any of Tuesday's fires.

Calls can be made anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or to Det Sgt Ryan on (04) 381 2000.
