A seven-year-old boy has been seriously injured after an electric gate closed on him in south Auckland.

Emergency services were called to Katote Close, a road that leads to Auckland Botanic Gardens in Manurewa, shortly before 3pm on Saturday.

The boy was playing with the gate when a car triggered the gate sensor. The boy's head became stuck between the gate and a wall, and he was crushed.

Onlookers frantically tried to rescue him from the gate, but he was unconscious and suffered a bad head injury.

Acting Senior Sergeant Steve Meade said the boy had been taken to hospital in a Status Two condition.

WorkSafe NZ has been advised.
