(File)

It's been a shaky night for several areas around New Zealand with a number of earthquakes rattling the country.

The largest was a magnitude 4.8 near Seddon at 9:42pm on Sunday night that GNS classified as strong.

Just earlier, at 9.31pm, a "moderate" 4.5 shake struck near Paraparaumu.

At 10:05pm Seddon was shaken by a 4.1 quake that struck just to the east of the Canterbury town.

The shakes followed on from a 5.1 quake near Wairoa in Hawke's Bay on Saturday night.
