A Wellington-based craft brewery has had to halt sales of one of its products in Sweden after reports some of the cans had exploded.

Garage Project was required to stop selling its Aro Noir canned beer on Friday - the same day sales began - after local authorities reported the incidents.

In a statement to Newshub, Garage Project said it was "extremely upset" about the incident.

"This is the first time we have had quality issues of this nature at the Garage, and this batch of cans accounts for 0.06 percent of the can stock sold this year."

It said the company strived to "produce unique beers of the highest quality" and the faulty batch didn't meet its high standards.

Garage Project said it would be working "both internally and with our partners to ensure that this issue will not happen again".

It appears the incidents were caused by over-carbonation, which Garage Project said occurred in two batches of Aro Noir.

"On discovering this we contacted Ministry of Primary Industries immediately and launched a voluntary product withdrawal across New Zealand and Australia. The cans were returned and destroyed and the MPI case has been closed."

While two stores in Sweden reported exploding beer cans, it is not yet clear whether any of the defective products had been sold.
