Hundreds trapped on highway with low water supplies

While all our eyes were on Kaikoura and Wellington today, hundreds of people are still trapped on a stretch of State Highway 1 south of Kaikoura on Monday night.

Both ends of the road are blocked, and the only way in or out is by helicopter. Food supplies are running low.

Hundreds are waiting for help at the Goose Bay campground south of Kaikoura.

Aftershocks have been continual all day, at times occurring every 30 seconds.

One big worry is the threat of tsunami, but now the tanks at the top have burst and there's no water.

For Julia Becker and Jan Dellmann, who have just arrived in New Zealand, it's Ms Becker's first day in the shaky isles.

"We don't have any reception to reach our parents back home," says Ms Becker.

Some need supplies more than others. Lorraine McIver is hoping to reach Christchurch by Tuesday so she can receive her chemotherapy.

Civil Defence has opened up its shed and supply cupboards and they are going to spit roast an entire pig tonight.
