The man accused of killing Auckland jogger Joanne Pert has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

The 41-year-old mother-of-two was on a regular run through Remuera when she was attacked by Tevita Filo in January.

Her body was found on the front lawn of a Shore Road property and Filo, who turned himself into police on the same day, was charged with her murder.

Filo was found not guilty on all charges at the Auckland High Court on Tuesday morning.

Mason Clinic psychiatrist Dr Mhairi Duff told the court Filo suffers from severe and enduring psychotic mental illness including schizophrenia, and did so at the time of Ms Pert's death.

She said Filo suffers from a "delusional belief system" and operates in an altered world of virtual reality operated by computer controllers from the real world.

"He states belief that the people he attacks remain alive in the real world. I believe Filo didn't understand he was killing a real person. He didn't understand the nature and quality of his actions."

Dr Duff told the court Filo didn't believe Pert was dead, and that her 'controller' remained alive in the real world.

She told the court he also suffers from hallucinations and hears voices which pass comment on what he is doing and where he should go next.

"He believed that he had to carry out missions in order to escape from the virtual world, and believed that once he handed himself into police he could return to the real world."

Due to Filo's mental state he was at high risk of reoffending, Dr Duff said.

Ms Pert's family said in a statement they are angry and unable to forgive Filo for the "heinous crime".

"Mr Filo's unforgivable selfish action has left us with a  huge hole in our lives, sleepless nights and when we do finally sleep, we end up waking in a cold sweat, wondering about the last moments of our much loved daughters life," they said.

"The horrendous death of our most beautiful, most talented, highly intellectual, much loved sister, wonderful mother of two beautiful children has left an open wound in our hearts which will never heal over.

"Every minute, every hour, every day, Jo is in our hearts."

The judge ordered Filo be detained in a mental health facility as a special patient, which means he will only be released from the facility if he is deemed safe.
