Police have confirmed the name of the man who drowned at Marine Parade in Napier on Tuesday.
He was Joseph Taurua Terrill, aged 51.
Mr Terrill had moved recently from Tauranga to Napier.
Mr Terrill's death has been referred to the Coroner and police are extending their condolences to his family and friends.
Construction workers and a lifeguard ran to Mr Terrill's aid after noticing he was in trouble but were unable to save him.
