NZ quake: Resident thrown out of bed as cladding came off the house

It's been a tough and rough day for many Kiwis following Monday's earthquake.

Allan Broomhall works for the fire service in Waiau - a broken town full of broken homes, now including Mr Broomhall's.

His neighbour Lindsay McDonald was thrown out of his bed and ended up on the floor on his hands and knees after the cladding came off his house. He says it was the rowdiest thing he had ever heard.

"I've been in some funny places but never thrown out of bed. And I tell you when the house is shaking around like that, it's damn hard to put your clothes on," says Mr McDonald.

The natural disaster has left emotions fragile and chuckles have given way to tears quickly.

While showing Story around, a major aftershock struck.
