A suspicious fire has gutted two classrooms at a small Canterbury school.
Emergency services were called to the blaze in a two-classroom block at Maungatere Alternative Education Centre in Rangiora at about 3am on Saturday.
Southern fire service shift commander Andrew Norris says the two classrooms were well alight when crews arrived, and they suffered "extensive damage".
As firefighters battled that fire, another blaze was spotted at a shed at a neighbouring stone products business.
Investigators are treating both fires as suspicious, but it's not yet known if the two are related.
