If you were one of the many people evacuated from the earthquake zone, you may have been surprised by the man flying your helicopter.
Former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw was simply doing his job, and on Tuesday that job was getting people out of north Canterbury by air and back to safety.
But how did Kiwis react? Were they completely surprised?
