A portion of State Highway 2 in Lower Hutt that was closed while police looked into an incident has now been reopened.

Police told Newshub the issue that caused the closure had now been resolved.

They had shut down the highway in both directions between Melling and the Kennedy Good Bridge just before 12pm, as officers continued to deal with the problem.

Police earlier said they were unable to make further comment on the situation as it was still unfolding.

Police have thanked motorists for being patient as they responded.
