Strong aftershock rocks the capital

Earthquake (iSTOCK)

Central New Zealand was rattled this morning by a magnitude 4.6 quake, GeoNet reports.

Residents in the Wellington region, and the top of the South Island, were woken by the quake, which struck at 3:22am this morning.

The quake was centred in the Cook Strait, approximately 30km southwest of Wellington, at a depth of 17km.

It comes at a time when the city is on edge following the strong quake two weeks ago.
