Taits says production not affected by fire

Tait Communications' says a fire in one of its buildings will not affect production.

The Fire Service were called to Taits on Wairakei Rd in Christchurch shortly after 6pm on Friday.

Smoke was coming out of the roof of a large building. The fire was well involved and eight fire crews, supported by a command vehicle, worked to stop it spreading to other buildings. All people at the site were accounted for.

Chief executive Garry Diack says the building was a stores area and also contained the offices of two commercial tenants.

Much of the building was empty as it was being refurbished.

"It appears that while the tenant office areas in this building have been badly damaged, the company's materials stores area has had only smoke damage.

"We are still assessing the impact of this but are reasonably confident the fire will not have any serious impact on production," Mr Diack says.

The digital communications company founded by Sir Angus Tait employs 650 people around the world and exports about 95 percent of products from its Christchurch base. It is an iconic Christchurch electronics firm.
