Terminally-ill 16yo about to give birth

Imagine being 16-years-old, pregnant and terminally-ill with a rare untreatable cancer which makes the outcomes of giving birth unknown.

Rihanna Truman’s cancer is so rare, her medical team says the risks associated with child birth are unclear.

"He's growing like a normal baby except he's a bit small, but that's normal for my health so they're not worried at all," says Ms Truman.

Ms Truman, who is living with her partner and his family, discovered she had adamantinoma when she was just 12-years-old.  The disease makes up less than one percent of all bone cancers.

The disease started with a bone tumour in her leg which she had to have removed, but the cancer remained. Last year, it moved up her body and into her lungs.

The cancer is virtually untreatable, with chemotherapy and radiation both failing to treat the cancer. But doctors are trying to find a new drug.

Unsurprisingly, when Ms Truman became pregnant earlier this year, her family and friends were worried. They attempted to convince her to abort or adopt the baby out but she decided to make a life and death decision.

"If I die, I'm going to be happy. Because for me, I have lived my life and my son will hopefully be grateful that I chose to have him," says the expectant mother.

Ms Truman is booked in for a caesarean section next week and she understands the potential consequences.

The baby will be in her family and partner’s care if the worst were to happen. Each day and each moment until next week is now precious.

"Even if I do pass when he's just been born and doesn't remember me, I would want him to be proud of me as a mum,” Ms Truman says.
