Arrest in Rotorua child abduction case

Police have arrested a 17-year-old in relation to the abduction of an 18-month-old boy in Rotorua overnight.

There were fears 18-month-old Elisaia Kiff had been abducted, after his father James said he was taken from his bed in the suburb of Koutu between 10:15pm on Monday and 2am.

At first it was not known whether the toddler had been kidnapped however police have confirmed the man arrested was not known to the family.

He was found safe and well around 8:15am and was medically examined as a precaution.

Police are not looking for anyone else in their inquiry into the case however they are still appealing for sightings of any suspicious activity in the Koutu area between 10pm and 2am on Monday night.

The 17-year-old will appear in the Rotorua District Court on Wednesday.
