Auckland brothers left homeless after father dies from cancer

An Auckland man says he and his disabled brother have nowhere to go after they were evicted from their Panmure home.

Tommy Tahana lost his dad to pancreatic cancer in October. He's also lost his mum to breast cancer.

Now he's lost the Tāmaki Housing home he shared with his family for 16 years.

His father had been renting the home for more than a decade, but when he died the rest of the family were ordered out.

"They told us to get everything outside, all our belongings outside so they could get the locksmith in and change the locks," Mr Tahana says.

Shortly after his dad died, Tāmaki Housing contacted Mr Tahana saying the tenancy had ended and he needed to be out within weeks.

Mr Tahana says he was still grieving and had nowhere to go.

"My dad served in the Malayan campaign, and I think he'd have tears in his eyes looking down and seeing what's happened to us now."

The 45-year-old cares for his brother Shane, who has a head injury. The family doctor says both have health needs and it'd be "heartless" to evict them.

But that's exactly what happened on Friday. The brothers still slept on the property - not inside the house, but outside on armchairs.

Auckland Action Against Poverty has stepped in to help the men.

"We will assist them into an emergency house - in all probability that emergency house will be a motel and that will cost the taxpayer $1500 this week," says spokesman Alastair Russell.

Tāmaki Housing says it has no responsibility to provide social housing, and those in need must to go to Work and Income.

"We offer our condolences to Tommy Tahana and his family on the death of his father. When a tenancy agreement holder dies, the tenancy lapses," says Tāmaki Housing general manager Neil Porteous.

"The responsibility for the provision of social housing does not sit with Tāmaki Housing. Members of the community who require social housing must apply through the Ministry of Social Development, which will assess their eligibility."

But for now, the brothers just want somewhere to go.
