Police have launched a homicide investigation after finding a body in an Upper Hutt house overnight.

It's understood a woman's body was found in a house on Ward St, Wallaceville, at around 12:05am on Saturday.

Neighbours told Newshub they were shocked to hear of the death as it's usually a quiet neighbourhood, and they didn't hear any commotion before police arrived.

A police spokesman says they're working to locate three people of interest in the inquiry.

Police don't believe firearms were involved, and won't be releasing any details about the victim until the next-of-kin have been advised.

There has been a steady stream of visitors to the scene on Saturday morning, where forensic investigators have launched an examination.

A number of people have placed flowers outside the cordon, hugged each other and cried loudly.

"Police would like to hear from any members of the community that may have any information in regards to any persons involved in this matter," Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee says.

Witnesses are urged to contact police on (04) 381 2000, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
