A fisheries officer was involved in a crash near Ninety Mile Beach that left an 11-year-old in a critical condition, the Ministry of Primary Industries say.

The boy was hit by a car on Te Paki Stream Road on Thursday afternoon.

Police, emergency services and a Westpac helicopter were called to road, which is a main access point to the popular tourist spot.

The Ministry of Primary Industries says they’ll continue to support the officer involved and will conduct their own review of the incident.

The road will stay closed until the serious crash unit has finished its investigation.
