Police are investigating after a stabbing incident at a property on Hawke Street in New Brighton on Friday morning.

A 46-year-old woman was found by police with a wound to her neck at 1:15am.

The woman has since had surgery at Christchurch Hospital and is in a critical, but stable condition.

A 68-year-old man known to the victim has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm and will appear in the Christchurch District Court on Friday, Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Ford said.

It is believed the offender could have changed his clothing before police arrived and may have discarded them in the New Brighton area.

Police are asking all New Brighton residents to check their properties for any discarded adult's clothing, and if they find anything to not touch or move it but call police immediately on 03 363 7400 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800555111.
