Pavlova is New Zealand's most popular Christmas dessert.

For many Kiwis, falling into a mid-afternoon food-coma on Christmas is a given.

And that's not surprising - if the Countdown supermarket chain's list of shopping trends is anything to go by.

Christmas day food habits revealed

Countdown anticipates we will devour our way through 67 rugby fields of strawberries and enough pavlovas to stack up to 31 times the height of the Sky Tower.

In the festive build-up we've eaten our way through 36,000 advent calendar chocolates and left everything until the last minute, with wrapping paper sales peaking this week.

New Zealanders are creatures of habit, Countdown general manager merchandise Chris Fisher says.

"We have found that Kiwis are very traditional when it comes to their choices for their Christmas menu. Our South Island shoppers tend to be making meals based around a ham or turkey with roast vegetables, whilst the North Island are creating dishes based around BBQ meats and a fillet of salmon."

Mr Fisher says stores and suppliers have been preparing themselves for the rush for months, making sure there's plenty to go around.
