Five youngsters are in hospital after fleeing police and crashing their car in Papatoetoe, south Auckland.

Police say the vehicle was seen driving dangerously along Great South Rd at about 4am on Monday.

The driver refused to stop, and a short time later hit a pair of parked cars and flipped.

Two of the occupants received serious injuries, the other three moderate. All five are in Middlemore Hospital undergoing treatment.

Police blocked off Great South Rd between Watson Pl and St George St while a scene investigation was carried out. The cordon was lifted at 9am.

The serious crash unit is investigating.
