A truck carrying nearly 200 LPG gas cylinders has rolled in Waimauku, northwest of Auckland, forcing evacuations.

The truck crashed onto its side on State Highway 16 on Wednesday morning. Its load of 192 liquefied petroleum gas cylinders spilled out across the road, the Fire Service says.

"It's a bit of a mess," Fire Service shift commander Scott Osmond says.

Both lanes of the road are blocked and diversions are in place.

Emergency services evacuated nearby houses as a precaution.

Ambulance staff treated the driver of the truck.
