Animal Control has saved a kunekune pig's bacon after it in escaped onto Auckland's Southern Motorway.

The small black pig "with two front teeth sticking out" was spotted close to Randwick Park at around 10:30am, and motorists alerted police to the emergency.

"We were called about a little kunekune pig running northbound along the Southern Motorway," a police spokesperson confirmed.

"It just sounded liked it was running along, and motorists were driving slowly around him or her. Apparently they were driving with their hazard lights on to try and guide it."

Fortunately, there was a happy ending for the pig.

"Animal Control came and picked it up," the spokesperson said.
