McLaren has denied speed was involved after a McLaren F1 sports car came off the road and crashed into a ditch near Queenstown on Saturday.

"We are aware one of our cars has had an accident," the statement reads.

"No one has been hurt. There was no speed involved and we have adhered to all safety and road regulations."

Skidmarks were visible for up to 80 metres on the road before the crash.

The driver, a 65-year-old Australian, was taken to the Queenstown Medical Centre with minor injuries.

The McLaren F1 has a top speed of more than 350 km/h and is worth several million dollars.

It was taking part in a McLaren sports cars tour of New Zealand. Around $40 million-worth of cars are in New Zealand, and drivers have come from all over the world.

But one owner will be rueing the accident - and the insurance bill.
