Virtual reality house fire puts you in the hot seat

It's a virtual reality project which is the first of its kind and could save your life. It's a fire service operation which puts you inside a burning house.

It started out as a crazy idea but has since been one year in the making.

Thanks to two brave 360-degree cameras, people can experience what it's like being in a house fire through virtual reality.

The idea is to encourage people to develop escape plans and understand what to do and what not to do in the event of a fire.

The fire service had to light a house on fire in Palmerston North to make it work.

The project will be released online next year. You can escape and once you are out of the house safely, you can look back and see your own house through images from Google Street View.

It involved a cast of thousands including camera crews, producers, the fire service and Story.
