Police are investigating after a large house fire in west Auckland revealed a possible meth lab.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at a property on Harbour View Rd in Te Atatu around 11pm on Thursday.

They arrived to find the fire well underway, and it took 20 firefighters to bring it under control.

The hazardous materials unit was later requested due to chemicals being stored at the property - believed to be used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

Police have been notified and a fire safety investigator is examining the scene.
