A man with a history of violent offending is on the run, after armed police failed to catch him during a Friday night raid in Napier.
The armed offenders squad swarmed Tamatea's Bristol St looking for 40-year-old Shawn Harding, but didn't find him. Cordons were lifted on Saturday morning.
There's a warrant for Harding's arrest. Police say he's dangerous and shouldn't be approached.
Reports of shots being fired were incorrect, police said.
They issued a warrant for his arrest a week ago, saying he was wanted for driving-related offences.
Harding was sentenced to seven years in jail in 2005 after stabbing his ex-partner in front of their children, and for a road rage incident during which he threatened a TV3 reporter with an axe.
At the time, he was using methamphetamine.
Police are asking anyone with information on Harding's whereabouts to contact them. Anonymous information can be reported to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
If anyone sees him, they say call 111.
Police say anyone helping Harding evade police is committing a criminal offence.
