Wind changes in the Coromandel region have fire crews readying for battle once more, after an overnight blaze destroyed several houses.

The fire had been contained on Wednesday but by the evening, was set to intensify again.

Six crews, three helicopters and four tankers went to the scene south of Whitianga around 8pm, but the response was scaled back by 10pm.

A fire service spokesperson told Newshub a number of residents have been safely evacuated.

It's not yet known if any buildings are in danger.
