Man charged after serious assault in Whangarei

A man has been arrested and charged in relation to a serious assault that left another man in a critical condition in Whangarei.

Police were called to an address on William Jones Drive in Otangarei just after 3pm on Sunday after a 42-year-old man was allegedly hit in the head with a piece of wood.

The man was taken to hospital with head injuries and has since been flown to Auckland hospital to be treated in the neuroservices ward.

He remains in a critical condition.

A 22-year-old man has been changed with wounding and will appear in the Whangarei District Court on Tuesday.

Police are not ruling out the possibility of further arrests.
