A man is in a critical condition after being "hit on the head" in a serious assault in Whangarei.

Police were called to an address on William Jones Drive in Otangarei just before 4pm on Sunday.

The man, in his 40s, was taken to hospital with head injuries and has since been flown to Auckland hospital to be treated in the neuroservices ward.

It is unclear if a weapon was used in the attack.
