Clean-up efforts are about to get underway at tramping huts across the Nelson Lakes district.

Thirty-four people fell ill after tramping and staying along the Travers-Sabine track from a suspected gastro bug outbreak.

All suffered vomiting and diarrhoea and the Department of Conservation is warning people off the area.

Cleaners head up to the area on Thursday to thoroughly de-bug the huts along the track.
