Four people have been hurt after a light plane crashed off the runway on landing at a remote rural airstrip in southern Marlborough, including a teenage girl and a middle aged woman.
A Cessna 185 aircraft left the Kekerengu airstrip, plunging over the edge and coming to rest about 40m further down the hillside, says Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.
It was called to help about 11:35am on Friday.
Two passengers had freed themselves from the wreckage and the pilot and one passenger were still in the aircraft when the rescue helicopter arrived.
The Fire Service, police and the rescue helicopter crews triaged and treated the patients before they were stretchered up the hillside.
They were flown to Christchurch Hospital with serious spinal and abdominal injuries.
Three suffered serious injuries and the fourth's injuries were moderate, police say.
Emergency services needed to use quad bikes to get to the remote airfield.
