One person has died, and several more are injured after two separate car cashes near Thames on Tuesday afternoon.
The first crash occured around 1:25pm on State Highway 25, when two cars collided head-on. Both vehicles had one occupant.
At this stage, police believe the silver car travelling west crossed the centre line colliding with a green car travelling in the opposite direction.
The driver of the green car died, while the other driver remains in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital.
The road remains closed between Kopu Bridge and the turn off to Turua until further notice.
The second crash happened at approximately 1:40pm on Kopu-Hikuai Road after a car, with four people inside, travelling west went over a bank.
A 14-year-old boy and a woman were seriously injured in the crash and flown to Waikato Hospital.
A third person has been taken to Thames Hospital in a moderate condition. The fourth occupant has minor injuries.
SH25A, also known as Kopu-Hikuai Road, has re-opened to one lane, but police urge motorists to avoid the area unless absolutely necessary.
A third crash occured near Katikati after two cars went over a bank, leaving one passenger with serious injuries. State Highway 2 was blocked off, but has since reopened.
The serious crash unit is investigating.
