A nice surprise awaited ski enthusiasts today as Mt Ruapehu was dusted with snow overnight.
Whakapapa ski area general manager Steve McGill said it was "a bit of a shock for the middle of summer", and the ski field had collected about 10cm of snow.
Visitors to the ski field were advised to use chains or 4WDs to get up the Bruce Road entrance this morning, which was icy after the snowfall.
A spokesperson said it's been a busy day at Whakapapa, with visitors playing in the snow around the base area and up at the Knoll Ridge café.
They also saw a people getting ready to ski.
