A slow Kiwi driver's apologetic bumper sticker is proving popular after a photo of it has earned nearly 2000 shares on Facebook.

The handwritten note, taped to the back of an old Toyota Corolla, reads: "Sorry I can't go any faster, got too many demerits."

The image, which appears to be in Mt Maunganui, was shared on the Only in New Zealand Facebook page on Sunday and quickly earned a lot of praise.

"I'm getting this as a bumper sticker for the back of my truck," one person commented.

Another suggested marketing it as a sign similar to the popular 'Baby on Board' one.

Demerit points are issued to motorists for speeding infringements, traffic offences or for breaching driver licence conditions. The points remain on your licence record for two years from the date of the offence, the New Zealand Transport Authority says.

You can get 10 demerit points for speeding up to 10kmh over the limit. If you're caught exceeding the speed limit by more than 35kmh you can get 50 demerit points.

If you get 100 or more active demerit points, your licence is suspended for three months and you cannot drive.
