Kiwi music lovers have hit a bum note after discovering that the price of the Spotify premium subscription is being raised.

Spotify is an online music streaming service, which allows users to access thousands of artists on their computer or smartphone.

The change in price follows after the introduction of GST on online streaming services in October last year.

The law, commonly referred to as the 'Netflix tax', now requires overseas retailers to be GST-registered and for them to return the tax to the government, which said it was missing out on around $40 million a year.

The change impacted on Netflix users last year, who were unhappy when the price for its standard service rose from $12.99 to $14.99.

The price hike for Spotify premium is the same, going from $12.99 a month to $14.99 a month.

Spotify emailed New Zealand users on Thursday morning, informing them that the increase is so they can "continue to bring the best service to music fans across New Zealand".

However users who have been subscribing to the premium service for a while will have an extra month at the old price of $12.99, "to say thanks for being a fan".
