Sun turning on for Auckland Anniversary Day

The weather gods were shining down for Auckland's anniversary day, with many Aucklanders making the most of it.

Much of the talk among those enjoying a day out was whether to go for ice cream or ice blocks but Peter Dunne's idea of moving the school holidays was among the chatter too.

His petition to move the holidays to enjoy the best of the weather has more than a few supporters, with many members of the public Newshub interviewed in favour of the call.

Anniversary day, a chance for many to get a dose of Vitamin D, is synonymous with boat racing, with almost anything that floats taking part.

The first Auckland anniversary boat race was held way back in 1840, and since then it's been a staple on the calendar.

Martin Keenan from Kohi Yacht Club said "it's the start of the second half of the sailing year, a lot of big events happening with the Optimus nationals, champs on the North Shore."
