A 67-year-old Takaka woman is in hospital after falling 40m down a cliff face in the Kahurangi National Park in the northwest of the South Island.

An emergency locator beacon was set off after the accident on Friday.

The National Rescue Coordination Centre sent the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, which found three people precariously positioned on a small ledge on the cliff face in the Dragon's Teeth area of the park.

The helicopter crew were able to winch the St John ambulance medic down to the party.

The woman, who sustained a serious leg injury and potential back injuries, was stabilised and winched on board the helicopter and was taken to Nelson Hospital.
