Police are working to identify the body of a woman found on an eastern Bay of Plenty beach.

Authorities were called to Morice's Bay, east of Opotiki just before 7pm on Friday after a member of the public made the discovery.

According to police, it's too early to speculate on how the woman died. Her body will be removed on Saturday morning.

Police are working to establish the woman's identity and notify her family.

The death will be referred to the coroner and a post-mortem will be conducted on Saturday.
