A series of earthquakes has shaken Canterbury's Arthur's Pass area overnight, with the biggest a magnitude 4.9 that struck at 2:35am.

The 8km-deep quake was felt throughout Canterbury, and on the West Coast.

Geonet registered the shake as severe, and 216 people reported feeling it.

The severe quake was followed by several weaker shakes between 3am and 5am.

Arthur's Pass has often been isolated recently after landslips in storms have blocked State Highway 73 in the area.
