Attempted abduction in central Auckland

Police believed an attempted abduction in central Auckland on Monday was sexually motivated.

A woman in her 20s was injured when she escaped from a moving vehicle at around 2pm.

She had been forced into the vehicle's front seat by an unknown man along Haslett St, in Eden Terrace, and jumped out on nearby Copeland St.

She had been walking towards Ponsonby at the time.

Detectives are with the woman in hospital, where she is in a moderate but stable condition.

Witnesses called police when they saw the woman escape and say the man drove away towards Ian McKinnon Dr.

Police believe he acted alone and was driving a grey or silver mid-sized SUV, similar to a Toyota RAV 4 or a Honda CRV.

The left side of the vehicle may have been damaged in the woman's escape.

The man is described as being a Māori or Pacific Islander, in his 30s, with a large build and tattoos on both arms. He was wearing a red and white checkered shirt with a grey t-shirt on underneath.

Anyone who saw the incident, or a car or person matching this description, should immediately call Auckland police on (09) 302 6558 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
