A car has become submerged in the Hutt River as flooding reaches dangerous levels in the area.

Heavy rain hit the capital on Thursday afternoon, leading to surface flooding on State Highway 1.

The flooding has now cleared on the roads, but the NZTA has warned drivers to stay careful on the roads.

Hutt City Council has advised the public that Harcourt Werry Drive, Block Road, and Riverbank Carpark are closed.

A large landslide has also come down near the Rimutaka Hill.
