One dead after group swept down Waikato River

A woman has died and three people rescued after they were swept down the Waikato River, north of Taupo.

The three who were rescued, aged in their 20s, are safe and being provided Victim Support services.

The incident took place in the Aratiatia Rapids area, below Huka Falls.

Police are now in the process of notifying next of kin and the Police Dive Squad will be deployed to recover the body.

The Aratiatia power station is a hydro-electric power station on the Waikato River, and is located 13 kilometres downstream of Lake Taupo.

The Aratiatia Dam floodgates are opened several times a day during summer at 10am, midday, 2pm and 4pm. 

The group got into trouble about 12:10pm on Monday.
