Kiwi snowboarder Sam Kerr dies in Japan avalanche

A Dunedin-raised man has died after he was swept away by avalanche on the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Sam Kerr moved to Japan after visiting in 2007, and started a successful snowboarding business.

The 35-year-old, affectionately known as Ren, or Rendogg by many, is survived by his wife Yuka and son Rui.

Tributes to Mr Kerr have been posted to Facebook, beneath a photo he shared on Saturday saying he was "keen as" for the day of snowboarding ahead.

"For the first time ever there is a darkness to the snow falling outside. A heaviness instead of happiness. Tomorrow we will shred it in your honour young Sam. Godspeed," a friend wrote.

His mother, Linda Armstrong, acknowledged the outpouring of support for "my boy".

"His joy of life was contagious, he loved adventure and he loved his family and friends unconditionally. I am so proud of you my son. Aroha nui xx," she commented.

A Givealittle page has been set up to support his loved ones.
