Australian driver Barry Fitzgerald has escaped conviction on a charge of careless driving after he crashed a $20 million McLaren F1 car in Queenstown in December.

Fitzgerald was granted diversion at Queenstown District Court on Wednesday, police say, but no further details were disclosed.

The incident happened during a convoy of 31 McLaren cars travelling from Auckland to Queenstown on Saturday December 3.

The crashed car was a 1994 McLaren F1, capable of travelling at almost 400km/h.

Skid marks were visible for up to 80 metres on the road before the crash site.

Fitzgerald was taken to the Queenstown Medical Centre with minor injuries.

At the time, local photographer James Allan claimed McLaren officials went to great lengths to cover up the crashed supercar.
