A magnitude 4.8 quake has rocked north Canterbury and been felt from Palmerston North to Timaru.
It has been described by people who felt it as a long, rolling quake.

A magnitude 4.8 quake has rocked north Canterbury and been felt from Palmerston North to Timaru.

It struck 5km north of Culverden at a depth of 24km at 2:16pm.

The quake has been classified as 'strong' by GeoNet with more than 700 people reporting feeling it.

It has been described by people who felt it as a long, rolling quake.

A light 3.3 quake struck three minutes later and was also widely felt.
