A body has been found in North Canterbury during a search for a diver who went missing on Sunday.

Police said the diver was experienced and went for a dive at 10:40am on Sunday with two others.

They were supposed to resurface at 11am but when one didn't, they were reported overdue at 12pm.

The trio were diving around 7.5 nautical miles north of Motunau Beach.

Air and water searches on Sunday were unsuccessful before the police dive squad resumed the search on Monday.

Police have yet to identify the body.
