A mass power outage left more than 50,000 properties without power across the South Island on Thursday afternoon.

Transpower say they have fully restored the power within an hour after the outage affected seven lines companies in the upper South Island.

As a precaution they have also reconfigured the network so it doesn't happen again.

Lines companies are now working to restore the power directly back to customers and is believed to be fully restored within half an hour.

Authorities say at least 36 intersections around Christchurch were left without working traffic lights.

The outage is affected at least 130 areas in Christchurch.

In February up to 60,000 properties in Christchurch were without power for a time affected more than 100 areas.

Orion said that outage was caused by the ongoing Port Hills fires.
