Police aren't sure how a marijuana plant ended up on the dashboard of one of their vehicles.

A photo posted to a Napier Facebook page earlier this week showed the vehicle parked outside a McDonald's restaurant, with what appears to be a marijuana plant in full view of the public.

"Parked up next to this police car at Maccas this morning... Notice anything strange????" Jayme Pakoti wrote.

Newshub contacted the police for an explanation on Friday, but didn't get one until late that evening.

"Hawke's Bay police have been made aware of a photo on Facebook that shows a police vehicle with what appears to be cannabis on the front seat," the police said in a statement.

"Police are looking into the matter and will speaking to officers about the circumstances."

Other Facebook users were quick to suggest explanations, including "someone has the munchies" and "gone to Maccas with the money they seized from this bust".
