A Featherston war memorial tree has died from 'urine burn' after being used as a toilet.
The camphor tree was grown from the cuttings of a tree which survived the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, but that was no match for the bladders of the Wairarapa region.
A former Wairarapa Mayor is horrified at the death.
"It was a very special tree, and we went to a lot of trouble to get it," Adrienne Staples told Fairfax.
The tree was planted by Ms Staples in 2005.
It's suspected a wooden shelter built around the tree to protect it from the elements was perfect for visitors to hide behind while doing their business.
